Hot News: Smart Three-Seater Revealed

Mercedes-Benz is developing a highly flexible three-seat Smart.

The plans, revealed in a series of patent drawings over several weeks and seen by Autocar, underline Mercedes' determination to build on its limited line-up of dedicated city cars.

Mercedes is reacting to increased competition from Toyota in the form of the iQ and the impending arrival of similar urban-based offerings from premium rivals Audi and BMW.

The new interior draws heavily on that used by McLaren in its mould-breaking F1 supercar, sitting the driver’s seat centrally up front with a pair of passenger seats set further back on either side of the cabin – an arrangement made possible by the retention of the rear-engined platform design used by today’s Smart Fortwo.

Early plans call for the unusual layout to be used in a replacement for the coupe and roadster pairing axed from Smart’s line-up back in 2005, after a run of 43,091 cars.

The low-slung three-seater has been conceived as a sportier alternative to Smart’s upright second-generation Fortwo, with accommodation for up to three, along with limited boot space at the rear.

Nothing’s official at this stage, but Mercedes-Benz insiders contacted by Autocar suggest the new car could take the name 'Forthree' into showrooms by 2014 as part of plans to extend the Smart line-up into a complete range of models by the middle of the next decade.

The three-seat cabin incorporates a number of innovations aimed at solving the inherent problems in such a layout, including the long stretch upon entering and exiting the cabin.

Among them is a swivelling seat base as well as a transverse runner within the floor that allows the driver’s seat to be adjusted out towards the door. Patent application sketches obtained by Autocar also reveal a complex seatbelt arrangement for the driver.

The three-seat interior is housed within a new interpretation of Smart’s existing Tridion steel safety cell, with sturdy longitudinal and transverse members aimed at providing controlled deformation and added crash protection.

Although the patent applications do not make mention of the new car’s proposed mechanical package, Mercedes-Benz is already well advanced on a new line-up of modular three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines ranging in capacity from 800cc through to 1.4 litres.

Also in the pipeline is a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Both are planned to make an appearance in the third-generation A-class, due out in 2011, before making their way into other Mercedes-Benz models, including those from Smart.

Porsche's worldwide sales could expand by as much as 50 per cent in the medium term, propelled by the launch of 'several' new models, VW Audi chief Dr Martin Winterkorn has told Autocar in an exclusive interview on a brief visit to Britain.

Winterkorn, recently victorious in a boardroom battle for control of Porsche, was in the UK briefly at the weekend to test and sign off a series of production prototypes about to hit the market.

Winterkorn told Autocar that he believes there is no reason why Porsche volume should not rise from the current high of 100,000 cars a year to 150,000, once global car demand has 'normalised'.

The expansion will have no detrimental effect on Porsche's perceived exclusivity in Europe, Winterkorn believes, as demand in emerging markets, principally in China, will take 'all of the new volume, and maybe more'.

New Cars: 2009 Mini 50 Camden & Mini 50 Mayfair

BMW has released more official pictures of two special edition Minis.

The Mini 50 Camden and Mini 50 Mayfair are being launched to commemorate Mini’s 50th anniversary, which it will celebrate on 26 August.

The two new models will be seen at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September and the show will also feature BMW’s ‘What a Birthday. It’s Mini’ show celebrating 50 years of the brand.

The Mini Camden, available in Cooper, Cooper S or Cooper D guise, gets bespoke 17-inch alloys, a solid white roof, and is available in Midnight Black White Silver, and Horizon Blue. It starts from £18,165.

The Mini Mayfair, £300 more than the Camden, comes in Pepper White, Midnight Black or Hot Chocolate, and is fitted with toffee-coloured leather seats and 17-inch wheels. Like the Mayfair, the Mini Camden is also available in Cooper, Cooper S and Cooper D forms.

BMW is also promising “further surprising [Mini] product innovations” at the show, including the production version of the Mini Crossman crossover.

The Mini Camden and Mayfair start from £18,165 and £18,415 respectively and deliveries start in August. The special editions will be produced for one year.

Opel may have to enter bankruptcy proceedings if a deal cannot be reached soon with either RHJ International or Magna.

According to Bloomberg, GM’s new 13-strong board is meeting today and will make the Opel situation its main topic of discussion to ensure the situation can be resolved as quickly as possible.

GM is said to favour the bid from RHJ, but the German government and four local governments who provide money to Opel are all strongly favouring Magna.

Roland Koch, the state premier for the state of Hesse, where Opel's headquarters is based, said there would be no German taxpayer money available for RHJ.

He said Germany has worked hard to make it clear to GM “that there would be no consensus for the financing of an RHJ takeover”.

According to GM’s chide negotiator John Smith, "[Magna’s bid] contained elements around intellectual property and our Russian operations that simply could not be implemented” and RHJ’s bid would represent “a much simpler structure and would be easier to implement”.

New Car: 2011 Nissan Leaf EV

This is the Nissan Leaf, Nissan’s brand new global, mass-market electric vehicle.

The Leaf will go on sale in the US and Japan next year, and in Europe by 2012. It has an electric motor with 108bhp and 208lb ft of torque, a 100-mile operating range, and will be priced to compete with well-equipped C-segment saloons, at around £20,000.

The Leaf is based on an entirely new platform designed to accommodate newly developed batteries as and when they come on stream. Positioned underneath its cabin floor is a battery pack containing 48 individual lithium ion battery modules. The pack weighs 270kg and can hold 24kWh of energy – enough to give the car a 100-mile range and also to send it to 62mph in just under 10 sec. Maximum speed is 90mph.

Nissan has been doing research into lithium ion battery technology since 1992, and says its competitive advantage lies in its ability to use manganese to make the positive electrodes of its cells, rather than cobalt or nickel. As a result, they can be made much more cheaply than rival batteries.

However, the battery pack for the Nissan Leaf will be leased by the end user; it will not be sold along with the car.

“We believe that’s the right strategy, because that way Nissan remains responsible for the longevity and recycling of the batteries, not the customer,” said a company spokesman. “Bundling the battery in with the car would also add at least £6000 to the price; the battery lease should cost less than £100 a month.”

Charging Nissan’s Leaf takes eight hours from a UK 240v supply, and 16 hours from a 110v socket. From a 400v three-phase charging station, an 80 per cent charge can be carried out in just 15 minutes.

However, the car will not be compatible with the Quickdrop battery swap centres that alliance partner Renault has mooted for its new breed of EVs.

“We don’t think Quickdrop centres are the right business model for Europe,” one Nissan executive told us.

The Nissan Leaf has a cantilevered flap in its bonnet grille behind which is the socket for its charging plug. Otherwise it’s a distinctive but fairly ordinary-looking hatchback with a roomy, leather-clad cabin.

Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura said: "We wanted this car to be distinctive and recognisable as a Nissan, but not too ‘out there’. It should look like a normal, familiar prospect, even if it won’t drive like one."

As a conventional family five door, the Leaf will also be welcomed by British buyers who regretted Nissan’s decision to abandon the European C-segment when it killed the last Almera. And as a completely emissions-free and affordable family car – a rival to Honda’s new Insight, Toyota’s Prius and GM’s forthcoming Ampera and Volt - it promises to be even cheaper to run and wins even greater environmental kudos.
