New Car: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

The latest 911 Turbo has landed… And in true Porsche style the updated version is virtually indecipherable from its predecessor!

Chrome headlight surrounds, restyled foglights and new wheel designs mark the only exterior upgrades, but there’s more to this facelift than meets the eye.

Under the bonnet, or wedged in the boot in the 911’s case, is an all-new 3.8-litre direct-injection, twin-turbo flat-six, delivering a faintly ridiculous 500bhp – only the second road-going 911 to ever breach the 500bhp barrier after the current 530bhp GT2.

That additional 20bhp gives the performance figures a healthy boost. At 3.7 seconds from 0-60mph it’s three tenths quicker than the current Turbo, and tops out 1mph higher, at 194mph.

But it’s an interior change that will have Porsche enthusiasts across the globe sighing with relief. The excellent PDK twin-clutch gearbox can now be specified with standard wheel-mounted levers – pull the left to change down and the right to shift up – rather than the confusing push button setup on earlier versions.

Most impressive of all though is that Porsche has managed to not only turn up the performance, but to cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by around 18 per cent.

Coupe and Cabriolet versions of the next-gen Turbo go on sale in the UK on November 21, priced at £101,823 and £109,048 respectively – roughly a £2,000 increase over the outgoing model. For more details click here.

Sneak Peek: 2011 Buick Crossover

A “new” Buick crossover will launch in 2010 with two direct-injected engines, followed by a plug-in hybrid variant in 2011. We say “new” because, while the as-yet-unnamed crossover is indeed new to the Buick brand, it appears to be largely based on the Saturn Vue. Following GM’s post-bankruptcy brand consolidation, which includes the imminent sale of Saturn to Penske, it appears the company has found a way to salvage the work done for its two-mode plug-in architecture while giving Buick a crossover entry below the Enclave.

For its debut in 2010, the crossover is slated to use GM’s Ecotec 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V-6 engines, which are also found in the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, Chevy Equinox, and GMC Terrain. Highway fuel economy will reportedly be around 30 mpg with the four-banger.

A year later, Buick plans to launch a plug-in hybrid version of the crossover. (We’d already been promised a plug-in version of the Vue, lending more credence to our Saturn-turned-Buick hypothesis.) The crossover will employ GM’s front-wheel-drive, two-mode hybrid system paired with a direct-injected, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Early prototypes of the crossover can reportedly drive more than 10 miles on electric power alone. The 8-kilowatt-hour battery comes from the same supplier as that of the upcoming Chevy Volt and can be fully charged in five hours from a standard wall plug, helping to increase the crossover’s range and fuel economy.

This may not be the only Saturn rerouted to Buick dealers. We recently spied a Buick Regal testing in the U.S., which appeared to be a European Opel Insignia with Buick badging. The Insignia was initially planned to replace the Saturn Aura but with the brand leaving the corporate umbrella, it may become Buick’s entry-level sedan below the LaCrosse.

We expect the rebadged Vue will get additional sound deadening and suspension tweaks as Buick says the crossover will offer the Enclave’s “premium driving experience” in a smaller package. When the new Buick goes on sale, it will join the Chevrolet Equinox, Cadillac SRX, and GMC Terrain to give each of GM’s four core brands a small and relatively fuel-efficient crossover.

Spied: BMW Concept Car

Last week, we told you about BMW board member Dr. Klaus Draeger's announcement of a EfficientDynamics Vision concept bound for the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. Said to be a "sustainable sports car concept," we expect the vehicle to be just as fast and stylish as it is efficient and eco-friendly. Now, we have these images fresh from the forums at bimmerpost.com showing what appears to be a concept car being loaded into a covered transport vehicle. It may be just a bit early to send the car to Frankfurt, but it could well be on its way to a private photo shoot to prepare publicity materials for the show.

Of course, the most pressing question is in regards to exactly what this vehicle is and what niche it is attempting to fill. It could well be the sports car concept Draeger referred to, with its blunt, aggressive nose, low roofline, rocker panel aero effects, and wide fender flares. We can only see two cut lines in the vehicle's side, adding more weight to the two-door theory. Still the vehicle appears to be fairly long and could be hiding another cut line above the rear wheel well, making this another four-door-coupe-type vehicle.
It's hard to get the full effect with the large plastic bag stretched over the car, but there are plenty of sharp angles in the front end, with a trapezoidal grille that looks similar to that of the current Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Should this actually be BMW's sports car concept, expect many of those covered panels to be made out of lightweight metals and composite materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.

So while you're waiting for us to begin our Frankfurt show coverage this September, let us know what you think about the vehicle you see here. What do you think it is? And from what you see so far, is it a winner or loser in the styling department?
