Spied: 2012 Hyundai Verna

Here are the very first undisguised images of the all-new Verna or the RB saloon snapped inside Hyundai’s plant at Chennai. The images clicked by our reader Naveen Kumar clearly suggest that the new Verna is already in production and the Korean company is ready to launch the saloon in India anytime soon.

Looking at the spy-pics, the front looks similar to the new i10 which incorporates Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language and some of the detailing on the long-shaped headlamps looks ‘Audi-like’. It also has a very sharp beltline which starts from the front bumper and ending at the rear, gives it a striking pose. The rear-end looks pretty attractive with sharp edges dominating most of the design theme.

On the inside, the interiors look fresh, attractive and well put together. The top-of-the-line variant comes loaded with features like dual-tone interiors, automatic climate control, electronic folding side mirrors, parking sensors, bluetooth enabled music system, steering controls for the music system, push start/stop button and dual airbags to name a few. The base variant however comes with manual AC and no music system, but gets chrome inserts on the centre fascia and inside door handles.

The new Verna will be available with Hyundai's new 1.6 petrol and 1.4 diesel motors. Transmission options for both engines include a six-speed manual and a four-speed autobox. The images suggest that even the base variant will be offered with an automatic gearbox option.

The current generation Verna hasn’t been a strong seller as was the earlier Accent and this could be the perfect opportunity for the Korean manufacturer. The key challenge for Hyundai will be to make this car ride and handle well to compete better with the likes of Maruti SX4, VW Vento and segment leader Honda City. We expect the prices to be in the range of Rs 6.65lakh to Rs 9.40lakh (ex-showroom).
