Frankfurt Show 2009 Highlights: Lexus LF-Ch Concept

In its continued drive to gain a larger share of the highly-competitive European market, Lexus is preparing an assault on the key C-segment with a vehicle that should bear a strong resemblance to the LF-Ch concept the brand will show at Frankfurt.

Built to take on the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 in the compact luxury market, the LF-Ch concept is a hybrid-powered five door similar in appearance to the Mazda3. While diesels still rule the day in Europe, the LF-Ch will instead be powered by a version of Toyota's tried-and-true Hybrid Synergy Drive under the hood. Lexus has not indicated whether the LF-Ch will use the four-cylinder version of the powertrain or the V-6 version, but either is a strong possibility depending on whether Lexus will target enthusiasts or fuel economy-minded buyers.

In addition to marking Lexus' foray into the compact luxury segment, the LF-Ch also debuts a new styling direction for the Japanese luxury brand. The LF-Ch appears to be an evolution of the sharper, edgier styling of the IS-F and upcoming LF-A supercar. A wide, low stance, combined with a short greenhouse and big scoops, vents and louvers give the LF-Ch an aggressive, sporty appearance.

For now, the LF-Ch is targeted at the European market, though it's possible it could come to the U.S. in the future and slot below the IS line. Rumors indicate that if the LF-Ch is well-received at Frankfurt, it could get the green light for production and deliveries could begin as early as next year.
